HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
The goal is for all students to complete all assignments so they can achieve their academic best. Mrs. Sargent and I have developed the homework process together keeping in mind how important organization and communication is between home and school. In 4th grade, the Homework Planner, provided by our beloved HSA, is an essential component to successful communication. It includes a "boomerang" folder with pockets for homework, notes and bulletins: parents + students + teachers = an awesome team. I will post homework on this website daily as a back up to the planner and I make it a practice to sign each homework planner as affirmation that your child recorded all assignments. Homework is not designed as "torture :) " . Rather, it' s a method to reinforce skills and memory retention. Students need to see/hear/work on a skill at least 7-11 times to retain and master it. Homework is one of those times. Here's how the homework process works (It's really easier than it looks written down): 1. Students keep their Homework Folder tucked in the back of their Homework Planner. 2. Students bring their homework planner to school daily, including their homework folder. 3. Students bring their homework planner home daily, including the homework folder. 4. The teacher posts homework on this website as a back up to the planner and initials each homework planner daily, verifying students wrote "it all" down. 5. The teacher has an established routine at the end of the day to assist students to "have it all" packed up for home: visual display of books, "show me the planner", etc. 6. Students complete homework in pencil, printing or writing in script, without using a calculator unless otherwise directed. These are general guidelines, some assignments may have other directions. An example of "other directions might be for students to complete a math homework assignment to reinforce the 3digit by 2 digit multiplication process using a multiplication chart if the goal is to master the process. 7. Students complete homework assignments and have them ready for review in class the next day. If your child explains the assignment was done at school, super! Sometimes students have earned time during the school day to choose an activity, and homework is one of those activities they can choose to do. But I explain to my students that I am a "parent", too, "Parents" want to see their child's beautiful work with their own eyes. So, students need to bring all of their homework home, even if it's done, so your parents can see it. If there's an assignment that's to be completed in a notebook, then ask to see your child's notebook. If your child forgot their notebook, they can simply do the assignment on paper and attach it to their notebook at school: likewise for a missing sheet, book, or workbook. Perhaps a friend nearby or via phone can assist so the student can do whatever "they" can to complete "their" work. 8. Parents are encouraged to assist students with homework if needed. We do review homework at school. So, parents, please do not feel you have to "correct" homework for your child. We go over the corrections together and self correction is quite beneficial to students. But, it sure is helpful to your child and very much appreciated by me if you keep an eye for completeness and neatness. Perhaps redirect your child to double check that everything is done, the way it needs to be done, shows a good effort, and is placed in the homework folder ready for the next day. It's always great if parents help their child to check off what's completed as they do it in their homework planner. 9. Students will highlight a missed homework assignment in yellow in their homework planner. That's the visual reminder to complete, finish, find, or re-do the assignment if it was not turned in when it was due. The goal is for all students to complete all assignments so they can achieve their academic best. Therefore, a highlighted , or missed, assignment can be completed and placed in the in-box the day after it was due for half credit. I encourage all students to take advantage of this learning opportunity for their own personal benefit. 10. If a student is absent, the school policy is followed. Basically, the student has the amount of days absent to make up missing work. |
